A full day: tastings and lunch in one booking
The Stellenbosch Four Estate tour by Wine Flies is the one to pick if you want a complete Winelands day without leaving Stellenbosch. Four estates, food pairings along the way and lunch are all part of the booking, so the main parts of the day are covered before you set off. It is a long day with a lot of wine: pace yourself, drink water between tastings and plan a quiet evening.
Reviewers praise the guides and the food pairings. One reviewer missed time to walk among the vines: at each estate the day goes from the vehicle straight to the tasting room.
A half day: the Winelands in five hours
The half-day tours suit you if the Winelands are one item on a busy Cape Town list. The Bosch Travel tour includes two tastings, one paired with cheese and one with biltong or chocolates. The Glorious Cape tour lists the tastings among its inclusions without further detail. Lunch is not included on the half-day tours, so eat before you go or plan lunch for when you are back.
Reviewers of the Glorious Cape tour describe being picked up in Cape Town, and one was asked when booking to check that the address was inside the pickup area; a reviewer of the Bosch Travel tour chose a pickup point a short walk from the Robben Island ferry. We have not been able to confirm the pickup area ourselves, so check it on the product page before you book. On the Glorious Cape tour, two reviewers had problems with the pickup — for one of them the driver did not show up — so keep your booking confirmation and the operator’s contact details to hand on the day.
The Bosch Travel tour ends with a stop in Stellenbosch town, and it is short: two reviewers had only 15 to 20 minutes there, one of them when the shops had already closed. Three reviewers found the second estate clearly weaker than the first. Our half-day wine tour guide covers the short options in more detail.
By bike: history first, wine on the way
The historical bike tour mixes a ride through Stellenbosch with two tastings. It starts in town, so it fits best if you are staying in Stellenbosch or can get there on your own — it is not a day trip from Cape Town with transport included. Summer days are hot: set off with water, sunscreen and a hat, and take the tastings at an easy pace, since you are cycling afterwards.
The cycling is the gentler part of the tour. Two reviewers found it a small share of the day — one counted 17 km in four hours — with more time at the tastings than they wanted. Expect an easy ride with tastings rather than a cycling workout.
