Worth knowing before you book

The Wine Tram is not all tram. Parts of the hop-on hop-off network run with open-air trolleys or buses rather than the tram itself. Fewer estates, done well. Trying to fit in every stop makes the day rushed — a handful of estates is a more realistic plan. The 3 Regions tour is a coach tour, so expect a large group rather than a minibus. Franschhoek is a drive away — about 1 to 1.5 hours from Cape Town each way. Summer days get hot: water, sunscreen and a hat belong in your bag, especially on open-air legs and on the bike.

Wine and the car keys

Tasting at several estates and then driving yourself is a poor combination. If you want the Winelands without a tour, the Wine Tram transfer from Cape Town handles the road while you choose the estates.
