The wine tours from Cape Town into Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl differ less in the estates than in the small print. Whether the tastings and lunch are in the booking, where the day starts and who may join decide which tour fits. Our verdict rests on those facts, taken from the product pages.
What the booking includes
The full-day tour by African Story Wine Tours and the Stellenbosch Four Estate tour by Wine Flies include the tastings and lunch. The other guided tours include the tastings but not lunch. The Wine Tram transfer from Cape Town covers the road and the tram ticket only, so every tasting is paid at the estates, and on the tram day by Cape Archives Tours the tastings are not on the inclusion list. Our Wine Tram vs guided tour comparison lists the inclusions tour by tour.
Guided day or the Wine Tram
On a guided tour someone else sets the route and drives you from tasting to tasting. The Wine Tram lets you hop on and off at the estates along your line and choose where to stop, which takes more planning. The African Eagle tour combines both, but the tram is a short part of the day: one reviewer timed the ride at around five minutes. How a Franschhoek Wine Tram day works.
Where the day starts
Most tours start in Cape Town, with hotel pickup or from fixed stops, and Franschhoek is about 1 to 1.5 hours away by road, so the drive is part of the day. The bike tour by Adventureshop Stellenbosch starts in Stellenbosch itself and suits you if you are staying in the Winelands. Wine tours in Stellenbosch.
Full day or half a day
The half-day tours run for five hours in Stellenbosch, which is closer to Cape Town than Franschhoek. Bosch Travel and Tours includes two tastings, one with cheese and one with biltong or chocolate; the stop in Stellenbosch town is short, and two reviewers had only 15 to 20 minutes there. Half-day wine tours compared.
Age limits
The legal drinking age in South Africa is 18. The tours by African Story Wine Tours and Wine Flies are for guests aged 18 and over. Bosch Travel and Tours takes children on its half day and serves no alcohol to under-18s. For the other tours, check the age limits on the product page before you book with children.
Season
The southern summer, from about November to March, is the main season. December to February brings heat and the busiest days on the Wine Tram, so book ahead and pack water, sunscreen and a hat. Best time for a wine tour and the harvest.
